about

Come with the ensemble to the Great Lakes as we recall the tale of the schooner, the E. C. Roberts and her crew, as they sailed across Lakes Huron and Erie to unload ahead of their competition in this forecastle shanty.

lyrics

Come all ye bold sailors who follow the lakes,
on an iron ore vessel your living to make,
we sailed from Chicago, bid adieu to the shore,
bound away to Escanaba for red iron ore.
Derry down, down, down, derry down.

In the month of September, the seventeenth day,
two bucks and a quarter is all they would pay.
And on Monday morning the Bridgeport did take
the old E.C. Roberts out into the lake.
Derry down, down, down, derry down.

The wind from the southard sprang up a fresh breeze,
and the old E.C. Roberts her captain did please.
Down through Lake Michigan the Roberts did roar,
and on Friday morning we passed through death's door.
Derry down, down, down, derry down.

The old ship, she howled ‘cross the mouth of Green Bay,
and before her cut water she dashed the white spray.
We rounded the sand point, our anchor let go.
We furled in our canvas and the watch went below.
Derry down, down, down, derry down.

The next day our watchmen, they spotted the Minch,
and she left the old Roberts alone in a pinch.
And as she passed by, as she bid us goodbye,
saying "see you in Cleveland, next fourth of July!"
Derry down, down, down, derry down.

We passed by the Minch just to show her the way,
and she didn't catch us 'til round Thunder Bay.
Now across Saginaw Bay the Roberts did ride,
with dark and deep water rolling o'er her side.
Derry down, down, down, derry down.

We ran in a swift gale, oh lord how it blew!
But we baled out the water while wind froze our crew.
The night, being dark as the devil would scare,
We hove up next morning and for Cleveland did bare.
Derry down, down, down, derry down.

Now the Roberts is in Cleveland made fast stern and stem,
And over the bottle we’ll tell it again.
But Captain Harvey Shannon, he never did flinch,
And we landed in Cleveland ahead of the Minch.
Derry down, down, down, derry down.
